D7. Music Magazine: Double Page Spread Photoshoot

I took my first photo-shoot at night which meant that the it was quite dark and the light I did have was orange from the temperature of the available lighting. Below is evidence of my shoots. 

Below are my two favorite shots from this photo shoot. 

However, it was still too dark and blurry to be used so I decided to do some more photography in the same place during the day when hopefully a better image could be taken.

I used two other models in the same location but during the day time to try and get a better picture however when I took test shoots of one of my models alone I found that she was very photogenic and the pictures with just her in front of the snow were extremely effective and the actual picture was beautiful. This gave me the idea to have a single person instead of the duo, however I needed another picture and I wanted to add in another picture of two people together. Looking through the photographs I have, I found that the pictures of two people together weren't as good as the single pictures.



I did another photo shoot with my model by herself to try and gain some images for the background that were like the test shots I liked.

I liked nearly all of the images created by the one person photo shoot however the above two were my favourite. After looking at them, I have decided that the first image is more appropriate for my double page spread as the background next to the model is plainer therefore the text will lay on top of the image better, as the writing will be able to be read. 

This shoot was to try and get some images of two people that I would be able to use. I decided to use a different model alongside my main model as I hoped that the new model would be able to relax more and enable me to get a different picture. I also used a different ski jacket in the hope of getting better pictures.

I once again struggled to get images that I liked however the two above were my favourites. I have decieded that second image is my favourite and I will use. Both models are smiling and their hair is out of their eyes so their faces can be seen and put across the wholesome country music star image, I would like to convey.

D6: Music Magazine: Double Page Spread Photoshoot Preparation

Before I started to take photos there were a series of different things I had to consider.

Models

My models needed to portray the image of a young modern country music band so I took this into consideration when I dressed them. I put subtle natural make-up on all of my models so they looked good and all blemishes were covered yet they still appeared young and weren't overdone. After looking at early pictures of country music stars such as Carrie Underwood, Cassadee Pope  and Taylor Swift, I saw that the this naturalistic look was frequent among young country singers as they tried to portray the young fresh look face. 

Since the shoot was taking place on a ski resort and was themed around the ski resort, I decided it would be appropriate if they were wearing outfits in which they would ski in, so I put all of the models I used for the ski shoot in ski jackets. I aimed to chose colourful or youthful jackets which would be the desired skiing gear for young girls such as the girls in the band.

Location

I went around the entire ski resort which I could gain access to and that would be safe enough for a photo shoot and I decided that the balcony were only the snow and trees could be seen in the background was the most desirable place to take photographs. The background would be plain enough that I could place text upon it in the final product, yet not plain enough to be boring. 
The following are different places I considered for the shoot but that I did not choose. 

D5. Music Magazine: Double Page Spread Planning Drawings

My first sketch (above) was to decide where the model should lie on the double page spread, after looking at the different options, I have decided that it looks best when the image is on left side of the page.

 I then drew two more sketches to decide where the three columns I wished to implement would be, I decided that if I had the second page with two columns and the first with one whole column it looked best. 

The above are drawings that I made to decide the combinations of color and position of different key features. From this I have decided:
- That i will feature the page number in the bottom right hand corner.
-That the picture at the end should be amongst the text.
-That the title and the enlarged quotation text will have matching fonts and colour.
-That the positioning of the enlarged text will be low and then high as shown in the middle right sketch.

Below is my font research for the title. I looked at a large range of different fonts before I narrowed it down and looked at different effects I could apply. 

Whilst, I produced my double page spread, I found that this font for the title did not work as well as I had hoped as the additional lines which I had previously thought looked like icicles to match the snow theme just looked like errors so below is the new title font, It had been my second favourite  so I am hoping it works well. 

The following are different mock ups with different fonts which have been narrowed down from a wider research. The last one is the font which I believe works best for the main body of text.

Similarities
The article from mizz and seventeen both have their picture on the left hand side, they both also feature a second picture.
All three have subheadings within the text which are bold and a different colour.
They all feature large quotation marks.
Two of them feature a larger letter to begin the article with.

The following is features from each different article which I would consider and like to intergrate into my own work. 

Mizz article

-Large heading on the very top.

-Additional image of a square picture amongst text.

-Main picture to the left. 

- Mostly san serif text. 

Miley Cyrus article

-Bolder different font for question.

-Big quotes.

-Page number bottom left. 

- All san serif.

Seventeen magazine

D2. Music Magazine: Double Page Spread Specfic Research

The following are similarities for the articles which I will try to use within my work.

Image to the left in most pictures.
The majority has a model from head to chest level, the others have head to waist but no more of the model is seen other than their torso.
Two of them have only two columns, Dolly Parton’s articles has three and Nicki Minaj’s article has five. From  my previous research I saw that three
Two of the articles have a solid background which is plain or with slight differentiation which I would like to recreate.
They all start with a larger letter.
Three of them feature larger text which is a direct quotation from the model.
Three of the articles include bolder writing for the headings/questions for a paragraph.
All of them have no more than two different main text colours.
Half have san serif font as their main body of text font however the other half have serif.
Three of them feature a page number in the bottom right corner.

D1. Music Magazine: Double Page Spread Initial Research

To start my research this time, I decided to approach it differently and just to look at many, pick out key points and then make the research more particular.

Similarities
-They all feature a bigger letter to start
-Most feature a larger piece of the text which is a direct quote.
-Dolly Parton and Nicki Minaj’s pages have bolder sentences which are the questions.
-Apart from the Nicki Minaj article they all have three columns.
-Muse and the NME articles both feature a square shaped image amongst the text.
-All apart from the Nicki Minaj article feature a separate picture and article however I would prefer mine to be integrated-The majority have the focus picture to the left with the writing on the right.
-Lady Gaga and Muse have quite small titles at the top of their writing which is the same colour as the text.
-All articles have black writing and all apart from Lady Gaga have one additional colour which is used sparingly on their text.
I will aim to include most of these basic guides to a double page spread. Additional Research 

 

As I saw the article of Nicki Minaj where the background was one, I wanted to find others of this kind.I prefer it when the text goes around the image like in the Adele and Nicki Minaj as I feel it enables the picture and the writing to become more interlinked.

All apart from the Rita Ora article feature the model on the right however from looking at the previous articles
